Recently it has come to my attention that TMS and tDCS have been used to modulate and measure mood. Since coming to the lab, my interest in neuroscience has grown a lot. As such I have spent some of my free time reading up on the topic, only to find that there is more than just research on tDCS/TMS and pain (as we study in our lab). There is a whole section of literature and research dedicated to modulating mood.

After reading some of the literature, and being a guinea pig for our lab at times, I have to say that I agree: TMS and tDCS DO in fact better your mood. This is coming from one subjective experience, and the effects most likely differ for everybody. But I find it similar to a good cup of coffee, minus feelings of anxiety and jiteriness.

Given my experiences, and the surprisingly few articles on the subject on pubmed and other research databases, I think we should be conducting more research on the subject. Anxiety and depression, in particular, are serious mental issues plaguing many people each year. We should be paying more attention to research for alternative therapies for mood disorders such as these.
